Midland

The leaders of Sudan have learned that the churches in the President’s home town don’t back down from a challenge.

In downtown Midland “Satan Is Defeated” appears on the window of the House of Refuge Ministries building.

The Sudanese ambassador to the US is likely to agree with that assessment. The article is well worth reading. It finishes with:

This is the sky-is-the-limit Christianity of Midland, preached from the deserts of West Texas and now heard in the deserts of Sudan.

I’ve only driven through Midland as one of many on I-20. But this article tells a wonderful story. Wallace could, and does, tell his own stories of life in the Permian Basin.

War

I check Sarah’s site several times a day. She always has something to say, and says it all well.

Today she talks about the war on terrorists, and asks the very pertinent question: “When someone says that war is not the answer, we need to ask them what the f-ing question is.”

Dennis Miller

I’ve watched his show the last two nights, and think I may become a regular viewer. The audience is involved, and gives him grief when he heeds it. His self-esteem is high enough he can take it.

Last night he had Morgan Spurlock on to talk about his film, Super Size Me. Spurlock wrote, directed, and starred in this documentary of his month-long diet of nothing but fast food.

He gained over 40 pounds, and his doctors were concerned for his life a couple of times during the month. One of the most interesting things was that he said the diet affected his mental health as well. After only about a week he had difficulty remembering things and thinking clearly.

Miller asked him what conclusions he could draw, and Spurlock thought fast food restaurants should do more to warn customers that eating too much of their food could endanger their health. Miller took exception and gave the money line of the night, equating that sentiment to the same voiced about smoking: “If you say you don’t know smoking is dangerous, you’re lying through the hole in your trachea.”

Willow Springs

Filed under: Golf — Bunker @ 7:14 pm

I played Willow Springs today, one of the dozen or so municipal courses in San Antonio. I decided to play from the tips, in spite of the 7221 yards. The course rating is 73.9 from the gold tees, with a slope of 134. For the uninitiated, a “standard” course would be rated at 72.0 with a slope of 113. The stroke rating is based on play in the fairways, and slope is an indicator of the kinds of trouble that await you when you stray. Length also factors into slope.

I shot 89, which isn’t too bad. I played the front nine alone, stuck behind a threesome who felt they owned the course. On the back nine, another single caught up to me and we finished the last eight holes together.

The guys ahead were not very good, but played like they were. One would pull a club, put it back and get another, change his mind and get another. Then he would take two practice swings, back up and check his line, then get up and hit. The he might take another practice swing because he topped the ball and it rolled 50 yards.

Another in the group was in no hurry to go anywhere. As slow as his partners were, they often had to wait on him.

The third was one of the types that really make me want to laugh and cry at the same time. He consistently hit the ball 150 yards off the tee. He would then stand over his ball and wait for the group ahead to get off the green before he hit his second–which needed to carry 250 yards to reach it. Over and over and over. If you can’t hit your drives more than 150 yards, what makes you think you’ll hit the 3-wood 250?

My pick-up partner made up for the delays. I played much better once I wasn’t standing around waiting on the guys ahead, and had someone to share the fun and pain with–and tell lies to. Golf is good.

Lynndie England

I saw clips of an interview with the infamous star of all the photos. She said,

“I was instructed by persons in higher rank to `stand there, hold this leash, look at the camera,’ and they took picture for PsyOps (psychological operations).”

The transcript doesn’t do justice to the words as she spoke them. It was very clear she wanted to pass the blame up the chain of command, but really couldn’t justify going too high for fear the claim would come back to haunt her. “Persons of higher rank” applies to just about anyone in her unit, as she is a PFC. Any Spec 4 outranks her. Someone like her boyfriend. If the pictures were for PsyOps purposes, they would have been categorized and filed for use in some way, not kept as souvenirs. Basically, she’s slinging BS.

A very pertinent article in The Scotsman tells The truth about Lynndie and Jessica, comparing many aspects of their appearance and demeanor. It puts much into perspective.

Tent People

Wallace went to a memorial service for a high school friend yesterday. The service was what I would hope for when I depart.

I agree with him that we are all Tent People.
