The Eagle’s Shadow

Filed under: International — Bunker @ 1:39 pm

One of the books I picked up last weekend and am currently reading is The Eagle’s Shadow. The author, Mark Hertsgaard, has written five books, and articles for several periodicals including Time, The Nation, and The Guardian. He is also a contributor to NPR. With that resume, you would assume he has a left-of-center outlook on things.

This article, “Why we still don’t get it one year on” was written for The Guardian. It follows the tone of his book, and is, basically, a preface to it.

The money quote of the article, in my view, is:

But the world doesn’t hate us, the American people. It is our government, our military, and our corporations that are resented. To anyone living outside the US, this may seem an obvious point.

This is an assumption made by many people. What they don’t grasp is that the American people are all those things. It is different in other countries, where the class you are born into determines what you will do for your entire life. Nowhere else can you climb from the lowest rung of the social ladder to the very top in a single generation. Nowhere. Australia comes closest, with England and Canada behind.

Hertsgaard’s view of the world is in direct conflict with those of Ralph Peters. I will leave it to readers to draw their own conclusions, but I think it is important to read both before deciding. Keep this paragraph in mind as you decide whether Mark has a clue:

Americans are ignorant about the outside world mainly because most of what we’re told about it is little more than semi-official propaganda. Our political leaders portray the acts of our government, military and corporations in the best possible light, and our news media do little to challenge these self-serving declarations.

I wonder if that opinion has changed any during this election year.

UPDATE: Check the Trackback link to Sarah’s site. She has much better analysis of this than I do. In particular, she remembered where SDB put this. Thank you smart lady!

Martha

Yesterday, I sent an email to my family and friends:

Martha Stewart was convicted today. What do you think the odds are of suburban white women rioting?

My son the cop sent this in return:

What’s funny is that she’s convicted basically for insider trading amounting to around $50,000.00 when she’s worth millions and for lying to the federal government,.. oooooooooh. She might get jail time when a low-life drug pusher gets probation for shooting someone in the head… can’t explain it. Not that I condone old Martha’s actions, though.

Yeah…we have our priorities right.

The Federalist

Mark Alexander, sometime contributor to various web sites and periodicals, is Publius over at “The Federalist”. The site has reference material on every document historically important regarding the founding of this nation and our culture.

I have been receiving email updates from Mark for some time now. At the end of last year, I made a contribution to his efforts. I won’t say how much, but it wasn’t really enough to cover what good I get from his thrice-weekly epistles.

He has been in the van for a program to distribute something special to our troops in harm’s way. Operation Shield of Strength distributes a special tag, paid for through donations and simple good will.

The dogs and I check the mail each afternoon when I get home. Today I got a nice surprise from Mark–two Shields of Strength. What a coincidence. I have two sons now in south Asia.

Thanks, Mark. And for those of you who don’t yet take advantage of the Monday Brief, Wednesday Chronicle, and Friday Digest, go here to sign up for interesting tidbits with a Constitutionalist slant. Actually (and I think Mark would agree) anything based strictly on what the Constitution says can’t be slanted.

World Trade Center 9/11

I got the photo at the column head from Mudville Gazette.

Thanks, Greyhawk. I’m an insensitive bastard, so I think I’ll keep it up here for a while just to remind people what this election is all about.

British Open

Filed under: Golf — Bunker @ 4:43 pm

I know it’s a little early, but yesterday I got a practice round in. The weather was supposed to clear by two, but didn’t. And I was already committed.

We played in 40+ MPH wind, with a light mist. We were the only fools on the course. It took me eight holes to get a par, but I did manage to birdie the 18th–a first on that hole. It is usually a driver and 6-8 iron, depending on hole location. Yesterday it was driver, 3-wood, and that just rolled about six inches on the green. I sank a 20-footer for the birdie.

Wind is intersting. It’s bad enough trying to read break and speed, but then you have to judge wind effect on the line and distance, and make a smooth stroke while worrying whether you hair will stay on your head.

Of course, the weather is perfect today, and I have other things I have to do!

Message to the World

Sarah finds some of the best things around. I, too, would like to see Bush make this speech.

Don’t you think isolationists would pull their hair out?

Teachers Strike

Filed under: Education — Bunker @ 6:45 am

Teachers in Tucson went on strike. Generally, I think teachers should exempt themselves from this kind of activity “for the children.”

In this case, what they were doing actually was for the children.
