  1. Bunker,
You’re gonna be sorry I discovered your site.

Firstly, Quarterly Evaluations, (otherwise known as “fittness reports”) perhaps in the TANG they are done semi-annually, are a permament part of that serviceman’s service record, not a senior officer’s CYA, (cover your ass) “memo to file”. This would have never been something that could later be sanitized from someone’s office 30 years later. These fittness reports are archived, out of reach of politicians and other crooks, last I heard up in the Military Archives Center someplace in St.Louis, Missouri. http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records.html

Certainly not in Austin, TX. So that old dog just won’t hunt either.

Secondly, Commanding Officers have a style of writing these reports that is immediately understandable to other senior officers, e.g., an officer gets a report that says, “This officer tends to write after action reports that include actions of others that reflect favorable upon himself”, means he’s a glory stealer, a liar, and not to be trusted. (wouldn’t you just love to see the fittness reports in John Kerry’s service record?)

Fish story, indeed. If you want to believe any of this stuff, I have some nice beachfront property in Arizona you might find interesting.

  2. Do you think I believe this stuff? Read it again, John.

I saw an OER that had written in the Judgement and Decision Making block, “Constantly pushes on doors clearly marked ‘Pull’.”

  3. And I stand, humbly, “sanitized”

After re-reading my last, I also stand “red-faced”, not only did I misspell “fitness” once, I seem to have done it three times. I really do know better.

  4. “…otherwise known as “fitness reports”.

Or otherwise known to us who have actually served in the Regular Army and Tx. National Guard…as Officer Efficiency Reports and are done once annually. To stress another point…the National Guard is a STATE organization so the records are kept by the AG of the State of Texas….although a copy is included in the individuals DD-214 file in the personnel records center on Page Avenue in St. Louis.

  5. Thank you, Wallace, for clearing that up.

Having never served a day in a Reserve Unit, or a Guard Unit, I have to rely upon those who did to straighten me out when I throw one out in left field. However, I did serve more than 13 years as a regular, the last year of which was served in re-hab from a mishap that got me my one and only Purple Heart.

Silly me, I always thought the Purple Heart was one the medal you DIDN’T want.
Now I learn if you get three, you can run for President….

  6. As my son Birdie says, they’re Enemy Marksmanship Medals.
