  1. Bunker;

    Nice website, kudos.

    I’ve read and evaluated about as much as anybody can, without actually holding the papers in my own hands, regarding the CBS forged documents, A la, G.W’s TANG service.

    A couple of things struck me as odd.

    Firstly, [Eugene Volokh, September 14, 2004 at 2:06pm] Possible Trackbacks, was dead on the money. One of the things I did was open MSWord and typed the phrase; “The first frost fell on the fir tree”. The “kerning” was immediately evident. Comparisons with the CBS documents available online were too close for my comfort zone.

    Secondly, I’m of the older generation which saw regular everyday usage of old fashioned typewriters. I was also discharged from regular military service in 1970. Those times are significant in that, (if you can remember that far back); the country was in a deep recession. There were tremendous efforts to cut unnecessary expenses from all government budgets. New fangled IBM typewriters were not part of what the REGULAR military used at that time; the clerks were still pounding out orders, memos, and day planners on old fashioned manual typewriters in 1970. Traditionally, reserve and National Guard units have survived on “hand-me-downs” from the regular military commands as the “Big Boys” upgraded to newer, more modern equipment. I somehow can’t fathom a Texas National Guard unit having so much excess funds in their budget that they could afford to run out and purchase new, top of the line, IBM’s, if they bought anything, it would have been something serviceable, but less sophisticated. That simply goes against the logical grain of how reserve units operate.

    Regarding CBS and their continued insistence that these documents are the real McCoy, I wonder if they’ve ever heard of the Law of Holes. “When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging”.

    Best,
