Thomas Lifson, in today’s The American Thinker, addresses a scandal which is receiving scant attention. And it involves the Texas (of course!) organization, the Belo Corporation. Their business? Newspapers.
The economic meltdown is being compounded by an ideological meltdown. Ever since Woodward and Bernstein bagged themselves a Republican President, the newsrooms of America have moved steadily leftward.
I think every reporter on a beat sees himself as the next Woodward. There are no longer reporters, just investigative reporters.
I love newspapers. But I dropped my subscription here because there was little of value in the local paper. I once checked it online, but no longer do even that. I’ve had phone calls at home asking me to participate in surveys. On occassion, I respond. Several times, it became obvious that they survey was being done for the paper and they cut it off when they didn’t get the responses they were looking for to continue it.
For some reason, they are surprised when I tell them I don’t buy the paper for the coupons. I have nothing against coupons, but it seems like and odd reason to buy a newspaper. I always thought the purpose of a newspaper was, well, news.
But there’s little of that these days.
***UPDATE***
Roger Simon has more fuel to add to the fire.
I know exactly what you mean. I used to subscribe to the Dallas Morning News (DaMN), a Belo paper. When it became increasingly obvious that all their “reporters” do is re-word AP and Al-Reuters stories with a smattering of press releases from various Democrats, I dropped them.
It took a month to get them to stop delivering their dog trainer to my yard. I called them daily and they said they would stop, but they still filled my yard with erosion fill. It was only after I threatened to have them charged with vandalism that they quit.
They then tried to charge me for the month after I cancelled, on the “logic” that, since they had delivered during that period, I owed them for the papers they delivered. I convinced them to drop the matter, after claiming I had phone tapes of my complaints and again threatening them to take it up with the AG office.
I will never, NEVER subscribe to a Belo paper again!
