Diversity in Oregon

Taranto points us to a lodge that proclaims, “WE WELCOME DIVERSITY. Respecting the interdependence & diversity of all life.” They apparently require you to bring your notarized ballot from the Presidential election before you can register:

FOR REASONS OF HEALTH & SAFETY OCEAN HAVEN CANNOT ACCOMMODATE SMOKERS,PETS, FOLKS TRAVELING IN A HUMMER, OR FOLKS WHO VOTED FOR BUSH & HIS NATURE DESTRUCTIVE POLICIES

And they’re serious about smoke:

NO BEACH FIRES * NO BBQ * NO CANDLES * NO INSENCE.

At least, I think “insence” creates smoke.

Looks like a nice place. Unfortunately, I’ll never be allowed to visit.

  1. The nice thing about the site…is that you can send comments to them without providing a real phone number or even a real email address. Not that I would ever send a politically incorrect message to them (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

555-555-1212 works just fine for the phone number.
anything@anything.anything seems to work for an email address.

While I would find it an absolute hoot for them to deny me lodging for pulling up in a rented HUMMER, with a Marlboro hanging from my lips, with BUSH 08 stickers across the massive bumpers…I guess I just don’t have the get up and go to do that. HOWEVER, I urge anyone that would like to see just how “strict” the policies are at this lodge to do just that. Even better if you’re a minority…

If refused lodging…I would imagine that there would be one helluva a law suit. All I ask is a small finders fee for coming up with the evil conservative idea.

See you on the high ground!

  2. through utilizing nature friendly practices

I suppose this means you can use the toilets but, “no flushing”.

And if they want to be completely nature friendly they can start by tearing down the big white monstrosity of a building they show in their photo.

  3. Jim, they have the right to refuse business to anyone. And I support that right. I just wonder how they discern Bush voters from others.

Yeah, the building is a bit of an eyesore to us red-staters, but it is really an environmental work of art to those with a true sense of architectural beauty!

I think the views are great, although the rooms look like some of the Army “senior enlisted quarters” I’ve stayed in.

  4. Bunker…

I’m not completely convinced in this day and age that the “We Refuse the Right to Serve ANYONE” signs are worth the paper they’re printed on. Ask Denny’s if that’s the case…seems to me that they’ve been the target of enough discrimination suits over the years that we’ve certainly proved you shouldn’t even look “cross ways” at folks, unless you don’t want to lose your butt.

When it comes to lodging/housing, this in fact might even be worse.

What reason could you possibly come up with to refuse service to someone driving a HUMMER? Okay, legitimate reason.

In any event, like you, I’ll never stay there!

See you on the high ground!

  5. Depends on whether you can get a jury to feel you’ve been wronged. Select groups can get a judgement. I doubt Dubya supporters in HUMMERs would get the same treatment!
