Iraq America Freedom Alliance

Filed under: International — Bunker @ 1:24 pm

Here is a web site to look at when you feel things are not well in Iraq.

The Iraq-America Freedom Alliance (IAFA) is a coalition of American and Iraqi organizations and individuals. We are committed to fostering goodwill between our nations’ citizens and winning the war on terror. We support a free, democratic and pluralistic Iraq that is at peace with the world.

Cosmos

Filed under: Golf — Bunker @ 6:28 pm

I got a new copy of The Cosmic Laws of Golf (and everything else) and finished it last night. I recommend it highly.

This is a typical mind-over-matter text, but is a quick read, and doesn’t spend a lot of time with esoterica that means little. Its focus really is meditation, and putting a golf focus on that meditation. I felt comfortable with the exercises the author recommended, and only got a little perturbed when he began trying to turn putting into pornography. I’ll let you figure that one out yourself.

Anyway, it is always tough to keep a focus when playing golf with frineds, but I did accomplish it a couple of times today with my negihbor. Especially on the last hole. My second finished pin-high to the left, just off the green, I could visualize my chip shot hitting just on the green and rolling into the hole, and that’s just what it did. I seldom birdie that hole, so it was a special bonus. What was interesting to me was that I had no conscious thought of visualizing the shot, it just popped into my mind.

It was my only birdie of the day.

I checked my scores and put some pressure on myself for tomorrow. I have to shoot an 81 or less to keep my handicap from going back up. The trend must remain downward!

I better do some meditating tonight.

Kevin, are you out there to berate one of your compatriots?

Why are some so lazy? No agenda at the Washington Post.

Have a Great Weekend

Filed under: General — Bunker @ 12:47 pm

I thought I’d spruce up the site a bit in honor of the holiday. The pictures of my sons at the top are there to honor them and everyone else serving this country’s interests around the world, and in uniform in our cities. The flag picture and the one of Dubya at the WTC in the left column come from this site which has a collection of 9/11 images by various photographers.

Have a wonderful weekend, ya’ll, and remember why we have it.

Mrs. Birdie

Today has been a busy day. Earlier this week, Birdie found out his Drill Sergeant School at Fort Benning overlaps the date he and Regina planned for their wedding. So they picked up a marriage license yesterday, and we visited the courthouse this morning. They are now Mr. and Mrs. Birdie Mulligan.

I reserved a room for them tonight and tomorrow night at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, gave them enough money for a beer or ten, and sent them on their way. People in Reservations had some dificulty in grasping that I was paying for everything on a credit card, and they already had all the information for that payment. After several phone calls, emails, and a fax, and a conversation or two with the Hotel manager, they were given an upgrade to the best suite in the house.

Everything worked out pretty well, after all.

Ricardo Sanchez

Filed under: Media — Bunker @ 12:33 pm

This morning, NPR had a piece on the Change of Command Ceremony for Lt Gen Sanchez as he departs Iraq. A CoC is a formal affair, but levity is acceptable. What is not acceptable is how NPR chose to cover it.

“General Sanchez spoke for a while talking about successes and failures. But he never mentioned the Abu Ghraib scandal.” Of course, that had to be in the forefront of his mind, and he was simply suppressing the image. So, the reporter helped him out by asking him about only one thing–Abu Ghraib. Sanchez said that it was a defeat, but those guilty are being prosecuted, and the investigation into others’ activities is continuing.

That scandal is now a speck in the past to men like Sanchez who have bigger issues to confront. It is being dealt with, and always has been. In his tenure as Commander in Iraq, Sanchez accomplished far more than this reporter will in his entire life. Maybe that’s what is stuck in the media’s craw.

What a mess!

I decide to upgrade my MoveableType to 3.0, and had, shall we say, some difficulties. Once I did the upgrade, I couldn’t get back into my blog. It would display, but I couldn’t log in. I fiddled with it for a while, reinstalled my backup of the previous edition, and still couldn’t log in. That all took about an hour last night. With Birdie and his bride-to-be visiting, I really couldn’t devote any more time to it.

This morning I tried again with my work computer to see if maybe there was an issue with the computer at home. No dice. SixApart, developers of the MT program, were of no assistance. I checked their forum, and it appears many people have had the same issue. The response from SixApart? “This is, after all, a Developers Version,” as if that made it okay for there to be a bug that won’t allow you to even get in. A bug, by the way, that didn’t exist in the previous edition.

What I did find after a bit of searching was a handy script called MT-Medic which allows you to get access to the user configuration settings for MT and do things like changing the password. So, if you do the upgrade, be sure to download this script and run it. I doubt you’ll be able to access your site without it any time soon.

Thanks to the programmer who put this script together.
