Birdie arrive today with some interesting news. He has orders for a new assignment, only his second ever outside 82nd ABN (he was on the UN Honor Guard in Korea for a year). This fall he will move on to a new job as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Sill.
I was curious why an infantryman would be assigned as a Drill Sergeant to the artillery training center for the Army. Apparently they want a third of all Drill Sergeants to be from the infantry.
That puts him only eight hours away instead of twenty. Drill Sergeant, I told him to get in touch with you for some expert advice.
No Problem…
In a way I hate it for him lol.
It’s not exactly a cakewalk. But I have to say that in many ways it is probably the best job I will ever have. Few of his headaches will come from the trainees if his experience is anything like mine.
If you have my rr.com email address give him that one. If not I will send it to him. I check it more frequently than the one on my site.

Is Birdie mean enough to be a Drill Sergeant?
He seems so nice to me 🙂

I have many fond memories of Ft. Sill from the summer of 1969. Well, really that’s a lie. I attended ROTC basic there and lived in a tent for 6 weeks in 100?+ weather and directly downwind from the latrine facility which was a board with holes housed in a superheated wooden shed. The nights were pleasant though, except that those damn RedLegs kept firing all manner of munitions all night making sleep fitful at best…….INCOMING.
But Ft. Sill is an interesting place and rather pretty at that with Mt. Scott standing sentinel in the distance.

I told him to do this a long time ago. I guess if it is only taking him 2 years to listen to other people’s advice, he is getting better…
After visiting friends stationed there, you couldn’t pay me enough to be in Ft. Sill. Hard to imagine Jacksonville, NC, having a better standard of living than anywhere else, but Fort Sill is one of them.
