He and McCain

Why, when talking about Republicans, do the media use this particular adjective?

Maverick GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel said Sunday that U.S. power and influence in the world is in decline, then added, “That’s good news, I think.”

I can’t remember the last time someone like Zell Miller was called a “maverick” Democrat.

  1. It’s their little way of encouraging Republican officeholders to depart from the principles and platform of their party. Everyone likes being called “independent,” or “gutsy,” or “a maverick.”

Trouble is, the subtle accolades last only until they figure they don’t need you any more. At that point, you lose the Old Media’s protection. Having already betrayed your party, and having no real chance of being taken in by the Democrats, you have nowhere to go but retirement.

Just ask Jim Jeffords and Bob Packwood.

  2. Zell Miller is a national treasure, a true patriot and a real American, regardless of party lines.
Anyone who doesn’t understand this is just too dense to talk to. I just wish he had greater aspirations
I have trouble understanding quotes like:
“The great challenge of our time for America is our competitive position in the world and understanding this great diffusion of new power. The United States is no longer the dominant power on earth as we have been the last 50 years. That’s good news, I think.”

I don’t think there is a problem in the rest of the world understanding this. Take Iraq for example, they see a guy on the corner holding an M-16 and they figure it out pretty quick. I think here we are seeing yet another politician saying what he thinks people want to hear.
Zell Miller would never be so misunderstood.
