The New York Times has transcripts of the phone conversations between Dubya and acquaintance (do friends record phone conversations?) Doug Wead.

The private Mr. Bush sounds remarkably similar in many ways to the public President Bush. Many of the taped comments foreshadow aspects of his presidency, including his opposition to both anti-gay language and recognizing same-sex marriage, his skepticism about the United Nations, his sense of moral purpose and his focus on cultivating conservative Christian voters.

I’ve not seen anything in the transcript which would be embarrassing to Dubya. Which says to me he is who he appears to be.

How refreshing for politics.

****UPDATE****

On the Sundance Channel right now is a film about how the evangelicals control the Bush White House.

A bit of irony on this day?

  1. Well those of us who knew him way back when he was just George, agree. If we ever get together you will have to get my wife, his ex-secretary, to tell you all her George stories.

i.e. being a typical single guy back then, the women in the office use to “suggest” that he run across the street to the old S&Q Clothiers in downtown Midland and perhaps by a more stylish pair of pants w/o holes.

  2. I listened to a discussion about these recordings today on the way to work. I heard several of the sound clips of Dubya – and I agree totally. I didn’t hear anything that I would be embarassed to have said. in fact – if someone were to record me in unguarded moments, I would not come across half so well!!

  3. I have to agree with Barb. While this story has legs in the aspect that Dubya has some questionable friends…I didn’t hear anything that changes my admiration, respect and sincere appreciation for the job he’s doing.

Do I agree with absolutely everything that he’s proposed or implemented? Hell no, but that’s politics! He has to keep more than people like me happy, safe, and productive.

Glad to have you back, Bunker!

  6. And Wead is definitely not a friend, he’s a jerk. I have better words, but they aren’t printable.
